I haven’t formally labeled my robot prints, but a nickname develops for each one in the process of sketching and carving.
This one, which lives in my head as “robot stroll,” marks a milestone for me. I have been making woodcuts for about a year now, and I finally feel like I am getting a better handle on the craft.
- I am doing a better job of applying ink — i.e., the right amount, more evenly applied
- The registration of layers is more accurate and repeatable
- I’ve experimented with three or four papers, and found one with the effects that I like (BFK Rives 140lb)
- I’ve added a textural element, which I feel leverages the medium a bit better
- My carving skills continue to improve
- I’ve gained a better understanding of how to fine tune the press
There’s satisfaction in feeling that maybe this batch is finally “good enough.”
